Don't you have to compile everything from source or does it come with binaries

I'm not familiar at all with Linux and wanted to try out the open source desktop linux operating systems. I am at a loss at how difficult it is to install this OS. I know how to create partitions but I'm not sure which partitions are needed for a windows replacement environment or how large to make each one. It took just 20 minutes to figure out I needed to run gentoo-nofb nox just to get it moving.

Not for the Linux impaired.

o no i have a dvd and an cd-rom player but i only can boot from cd-rom i can`t boot from dvd what can i do???
I have an usb-stick(8gb) can i boot from that???
