can some1 help me please , in the first level when the timer reach 0, and the first portal appears, i get an error that hl2 cant run anymore plz help me its always on the same point ( i use vista)

i can't run this game!
when i open poth .bat files the intro appears, disappears and then nothing...
i've also tried to make my own shortcut from hl2.exe with parameters -game portal , it went fullscreen and then same as with the .bat files...

I have the same problem as ValvV...The game closes just when the first portal opens. Perhaps a video card compatibility issue? If someone could reply to this and solve the issue, it would be nice. I'd like to know if I have to get a new video card or what.

Well, I always have problems with source games unless I set it to dxlevel 8, so do this:
Find the executable
make a shortcut
go in properties
There should be a place where it tells where the executable is
After the quotes, put -dxlevel 8.0 or -dxlevel 7.0

Does this version of the game use the map directory to store maps or does it have portal content.gcf? i am a developer and with those kind of files it wont let you import models and maps.

having the same problem, right when I see the portal I get an error then I have to shut down hl2.

Whenever the countdown timer stops th portals open and then i get a window saying that hl2.exe stopped working. How do I prevent this from happening.

Worked excellent except:

No Dual Core support (CPU Goes up to 50% and won't go any further, as a result the game lags on a few parts such as in large rooms with both portals in view.)

No developer commentary, the audio files have been deleted, the subtitles are still there but they scroll to fast to read.

same problem as listed above: as soon as portal opens, the entire game quits

I just love dopeman, ToeD and Skullptura ! They make so fkin' nice compressions and with nice CPU it takes just several minutes to compress these games ! Always worked for me :)

What version of DirectX do you need for this?

ok, maybe this is gonna sound like a stupid question but i'm at a loss here. when i click on the file to open it it gets to the loading screen then shuts down telling me that i need directx8 or higher in order to run the program... i have directx9 on my computer. any thoughts?

skurai33: Update or reinstall your video card driver. I had the same problem with my laptop's nVidia Geforce4 440 Go - the driver was reporting it as only dx7, when it actually supports 8. Reinstalled the driver and the "you need dx8" error went away. As a side note: it turned out that the 440 Go DOES support dx8, but does NOT support pixel shaders. Portal requires pixel shader 1.1 or above. I currently have Portal playing using TransGaming's freeware SwiftShader demo (does ALL video card work in the CPU - I'm getting around 5 FPS on average in Portal on a 2.53 GHz P4 - works much better on chips with HyperThreading or multiple cores).

(nVidia only releases laptop video card drivers to OEM's, so I used laptopvideo2go.com, which takes the normal public-release ForceWare drivers and makes modified INF files to use them with laptops.)

I cant play this game, I use MyPC_SuKS_PoRTaL, because my PC really sucks, I just don't know why is that every time I open the game it loads the Valve Guy and then it crash and appaers a message: "Engine Error. This game has a minimum requirement of DirectX8.0 to run properly", so this means that I cant play this game with my PC?
